
The time had come. My bachelor’s level had been newly in hand, and I also decided to accept the first job I had been offered ( it absolutely was the Great Recession and driving a car of unemployment was very real). Thankfully, working together with high school seniors as they navigated the college application process turned out to be a fit that is great me! I learned many things working at a highschool (did you know there is an app that calculates the likelihood you’ll get yourself a snow day?!), and each fall was a course in how difficult its to be always a 12th grader.
Senior is tough year! You are in your most difficult classes up to now, you’re accepting increasingly more obligations, you’re hitting a milestone virtually every week…and then we ask you to college. 12th grade may never be effortless, you can simply make it less hard. Though each student’s college process is unique, you will find a number of behaviors/mind sets that I have experienced cause unnecessary stress time and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Common Appocalypse (and by some I mean me personally), but they’re all avoidable if you know just how to recognize the signs!
Focusing too much on that which you can’t change.
Would you keep worrying about that C you got in freshman English? Are you regretting your final decision to give up the track team? Many students spend their fall that is senior focusing the past, and it drains their time and energy like Snapchat drains my phone battery pack. Instead of stressing about things you can’t change, spend your time writing a well thought out essay, striving for great senior 12 months grades, and putting together the most readily useful application you can. Think upward and onward!
Ignoring the advice of your elders.
Would you nod if your counselor speaks then instantly wipe the conversation from your memory? Do you reject your parents’ guidance like it’s your task? I’m shocked…really, I’m. Keep in head that, as they might not always be ‘hip and along with it,’ the adults in your life could offer important insight into your application procedure (and even assist you identify your strengths so you can better highlight them). Ignoring their advice can cut you faraway from some pretty valuable information, so have you thought to take all the help it is possible to get?
Falling in love.
No, I’m not referring to the lab partner you’ve had a crush on for years (though you should certainly simply inform them currently)! I’m speaing frankly about the head-over-heels feeling students often get for one university on their list. There’s a huge difference between having a choice that is first being so fixated on a school that you can’t even fathom going somewhere else. It is called the faculty process for a reason—no one knows exactly how it will end! You are admitted to your top choice (and obviously I hope your top choice is USC), I strongly encourage you to keep an open mind and find a number of institutions you would love to attend though I sincerely hope.
Avoidance.
Are you currently leaving things towards the last minute? Are you currently putting off searching for what supplementary essays you need to write? Are you currently reading this post on January 14th? You are procrastinating! Despite what you may tell yourself, no one works most readily useful under stress (trust me…this is a ‘do as I state, not as I do’ situation). Numerous drafts would be the key to a good essay, and making significant progress before the eleventh hour is the sole defense against an application that is sloppy. You have enough on your own dish senior year. If you do not have a plan yet for how you will complete each of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! That you do not want to rush (or worse, forget something) in this technique. So stop looking over this weblog and get to work—I know you can perform it!
Pupil Highlight: USC Student Body President, Edwin Saucedo

It’s Natalie Guevara and I’m excited to start working with our blog. While coming up with subject ideas, I considered common concerns we get from potential students plus one of my favorites is obviously: exactly what’s it like to be described as a student at USC? And although I’m an alumna of the university and had my own experiences… that is great really want you to listen to from current pupils with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about most of the cool things I have to say (many of you get an adequate amount of that), I’ll find current students to let you know about their experiences. For our first installment, we now have Edwin Saucedo, the Student Body President for the Undergraduate Student Government. He is originally from South Gate, CA and it is set to graduate this coming May 2017. Here is what he’d to state:
Four years ago, I found myself where many of maybe you are right now: frustrated with my personal statement and fed up with looking for the perfect college. It was hard enough trying to navigate college applications when neither of my parents spoke English or had pursued degree themselves. The stress of finding the place that is best to spend the following four years was extremely overwhelming.
As we think straight back inside my college application process the first thing I have to say is shmoop.pro, everything worked out much better than i possibly could have ever expected. Whenever I applied to college we never thought I would find yourself at USC. I grew up in Southern Gate, CA where just 6% for the population that is total a college degree. It goes without saying, We never imagined i’d find myself being the pupil Body President my year that is senior here. The four years in between my year that is senior of college and senior year of college have induced a wide range of lessons, experiences, and friendships we never expected. However, the combination of all these unexpected life outcomes has indeed led me to where I am today.
Being Student Body President at one of the most prestigious universities within the country can be an job that is intimidating. It is not easy trying to express nearly 19,000 students who result from over 100 different countries, are of all different races, and have extremely diverse economic backgrounds. However, its also a very opportunity that is rewarding. Every i get to go into our student government office and ask myself: how can I make this university a better place for all students day? That is our objective in student government, to create the most effective undergraduate experience, and that’s why I decided to run for this position spring that is last.
I spend at least twenty hours every week listening to pupils’ experiences, asking them how I could be of any service, and connecting them to your channels that are proper this campus. On one other side of things, I advocate on the behalf to administration in efforts generate better campus policies, address any issues, and plan for future years of our campus. My favorite part however is taking the info we learned from both students and administrators and coming up with unique solutions to addressing these issues.
In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and creative thinkers. We challenge each other’s ideas and provides suggestions on improvements. At the end of the we come up with proposals on how to address each and every issue day. It is through these imaginative proposals that we’ve been able to get our students uber that is free from 7pm to 2 am and have gotten a regular farmers market on campus. But our work does not end there. Over the length of the year our pupil government places on over 300 free events for our students. These consist of intimate talks about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or artists like Diplo for our students to take pleasure from.
We shape the experience that is undergraduate give students the chance to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is really what university is focused on. No matter yourself and be challenged by others whether you go to USC or choose elsewhere as your new home, dare to challenge. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my own, they’re not right or wrong but different, and that is okay.
As you approach the last months of the school application process don’t worry as much about where you may wind up, but alternatively everything you will do as soon as you get there. College is a right time for you to explore and find your passion. I came across my passion within student government and working towards enhancing USC for present and future students. For you, that passion may lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your last months of high school and get ready to embark in a new journey complete of unique and exciting experiences.
